Many people told us (Fabian and me), there is nothing to see. But living just 70 Miles away from the 11th biggest city in the USA, Detroit, and making not one little trip wouldn't be acceptable. ;-) On the weekend of 9th week of the term we decided to see Detroit.
Some miles before downtown we saw a lot of shabby buildings. Probably one of the reasons for that is, that Detroit lost about 900.000 inhabitants since 1950, that's 50%.
A bit later we arrived in downtown, in front of the huge GM building. About 500 meters north the Detroit River we found a free parking area, so we left the car there and made a little walk along the river. It's a very nice view, the river looks nice and on the other side of the river you can see the nature of Canada and some nice-looking hotels. You can walk about 1 mile in this direction, than there is nothing to see anymore. So we walked a bit around that place, went into the GM skyscraper, got some food and went back to the car. ;-)
We also wanted to see Belle Isle. That should be another nice place. The problem was, we had no map with that isle on it. So we searched along the river and saw a lot of Detroit's industry - but no isle. When you go to Detroit, you should prepare yourself and see it.
Another nice place is the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn (a bit west of Detroit). People told us that you can spend easily two days there. Unfortunately it closed already at 5pm on that day, so we didn't want to spend $15 for just 1 or 2 hours.
Totally we spent just about 4 hours in Detroit. There is not much to see but it was still a nice and cheap day. I can recommend everyone to go and see Detroit when you are around!
